Peer Mediators
Peer Mediation is a tool for resolving conflicts between two or more people who voluntarily come together to solve their problems. It takes the disputing parties through a calm and rational, non-violent process which enables them to see how their actions affect others. The process is non-judgemental and does not determine right or wrong. Problems are solved jointly through a win/win solution which enables each side to get their needs met. students
The Peer Mediation Program has been a part of St. Joan of Arc School since 1997 and grooms students in the 5th-8th grade to serve as peace-makers for their peers. Mediators are taught how to conduct a mediation between students, which results in the disputing parties not only coming to a fair and jointly agreeable solution to the present problem, but also leaves them able to find creative, non-violent ways to end other conflicts that may arise between them. The program helps the students selected for training come to a better understanding of themselves. It teaches them communication skills, both verbal and non-verbal. It teaches creative, non-violent problem solving skills. It awakens an understanding that everything we do affects others as well as ourselves. It guides them to understand positive ways to handle emotions. It awakens within them the need to be in control of themselves, and then shows them how their own self-control can have positive effect on others.
