How to Cite Resources
MLA Bibliographic Format

  1. Arrange all sources alphabetically by first word, which will generally be either the author’s last name or the first important word of the title.
  2. For each source listed, begin first line at margin.
  3. Underline titles of books, magazines, newspapers, pamphlets (including online versions of each), software, and websites.
  4. If required information (such as author) is not available, just leave it out.
  5. If the information on a source is long and a second line is needed, indent 5 spaces or one half inch on the second line.
  6. If there are two authors, include both authors’ names (See Newspapers citation).  If there are three or more authors, list only the first author’s name and the words et al after it.  Example: Norton, John W. et al. Van Gogh. New York: Harper, 1999.
  7. Skip a line in between each source listed.
