Making mummies out of carrots

Materials needed:
*carrots, newspaper, foil pans, canola oil,
 glue ('resin'), cheesecloth, 'natron'
 mixture (salt:baking soda=3:1), mulling
spices, cups for spices, pans for natron,
 bowls for oil

Preparation:
*Cover tables with newspaper, or use
washable tables in the art room or
 science lab.
*Cut cheesecloth into strips of roughly four
inches by twenty four inches, or the
 normal width of the cheesecloth.
*For a class of thirty students, we
 consumed seven packages of cheesecloth.

Procedure:
*Roll the carrot in the natron mixture.
*Wrap one layer of cheesecloth around the
 carrot.
*Smear glue ('resin') over the cheesecloth.
*Smear oil over the cheesecloth.
*Roll the carrot in the salt/baking soda
 mixture ('natron').
*Sprinkle spices over the cheesecloth.
*Repeat steps 2-6 if desired, but finish
with a layer of cheesecloth covered in
 glue.

*The illustration shows a student covering
the first layer of cheesecloth with glue.

Finish:
*Put "mummy" on foil pan
*Identify with student's initials on a small
 square of masking tape.
*Place the small square of tape on the foil
pan in front of the mummy.
*Wash hands
*Wipe off tables
*Allow the mummies to dry over a period
 of several weeks.
*Mummies may be opened once they rattle
 when shaken!
