INTRODUCTION
Ancient Africa has a rich culture dating back to Hunters and Gatherers. History was passed down and communicated various ways, prior to the development of writing. Ghana, Mali, and Songhay each rose in importance, then faded over time. Trade was critical to the wealth of each of these civilizations.
For this project, you will investigate how history was passed on to each generation. In addition, you will gain an in depth understanding of the areas of Ghana, Mali, and Songhay, as well as generating a few questions of your own! Your assignment is to answer the questions listed below.
RESEARCH
1. Explain the role of the griot in communicating history in Africa.
2. Describe the ways in which drums were used to convey messages.
3. What was the most important transport 'vehicle' in Northwestern Africa and what were its capabilities?
4. Who was the founder of Mali?
5. Describe the three distinct regions controlled by Mali.
6. What were some of the geographic advantages of Mali?
7. You Explore! Write two questions from your research of Ghana, and two questions from your research of Songhay. A few of these questions should focus on trade and natural resources.
