Part One:  Multiple Choice ( 30 points - 6 questions at 5 points each).  You will circle the letter that has the best answer to each statement.  Here is a sample question:

After Byron gets a “do” Momma and Dad decide

    A.    to send him to reform school.
    B.    to take him to Birmingham, Alabama to live with Grandma Sands.
    C.    that Kenny should get a “do”.
    D.    give up on every changing Byron.

The correct answer is B.

Part Two:  Short Answer (10 points).  In order to receive full credit, write your answers in complete sentences.  Here is a sample question:

Kenny and Byron see a mourning dove on a telephone wire.  What does Byron do?
A correct answer should include Byron killing the bird with a stone, throwing up after the bird dies, crying, then burying the bird.

Part Three:  Matching (10 points).  Write the letter of the definition for each word.  Here are the words you should know:

emulate - imitate; try to do as well as
peon - a day laborer
pervasive - present throughout
pinnacle -  the highest point
ultimate - the last, final

Part Four:  Essay (20 points)  The essay will be written in class during the test.  Here is the essay question: 

The character of Byron changes as the book unfolds.  Describe how Byron behaves at the beginning of the book and how he changes.  Include examples from the story to support your writing.  The essay must be written in cursive.  Any obvious misspelled words or punctuation errors will cost you points, so proofread carefully.
