A Scavenger Hunt

One of the ways to cut down on
our work load is to be aware of tools we can use to simplify our jobs. Let's
take a closer look at simple machines!
Your job is to work cooperatively to
finish the following scavenger hunt. You will know that you have done a
great job if:
- your group gets along.
- your
group learns a lot
- your
group finishes in the time allotted.
- your
group turns in a complete, neat answer journey
sheet.
Start Here:
Print out one copy of the journey sheet per group. Make sure
all group members write their names on the paper.
Click on the highlighted links below
to find the answers to your questions. Remember, you may not always find the
answer on the first page. You may have to try other pages and other
links.
Using the Canada
Science & Technology Museum link, answer the following
questions:
1. What are the two basic families of
simple machines?
2. First, label
each of the boxes on your answer sheet with one of the six types of simple
machines. Next, write an example of each simple machine in the space under
"Type". Finally, draw and label the example of each of the six simple
machines in the boxes. Use color!

What does “work” mean in science?
(Include the formula.)

After answering
the question above, read about each type of simple machine. As you read,
click on “Extra Information” for each. Look for more links that will show
you examples of each simple machine. Discuss what you read with your
group, then write two things you have learned on the back of your journey
sheet.

6. Which simple machines belong to the lever
family?

7. Watch the movie
about the Inclined Plane. Where did Moby send Tim at the end of the

8. Play the
quiz. Some of the questions are hard, so think carefully about all you
have learned. Discuss the questions with your partner. Try to make
good guesses.

10. Print out a copy of the
test
to see how much you have learned! Turn it in with your journey
sheet.
