One of the ways to cut down on our work load is to be aware of tools we can use to simplify our jobs. Let's take a closer look at simple machines!

Your job is to work cooperatively to finish the following scavenger hunt.  You will know that you have done a great job if:

    • your group gets along.

    • your group learns a lot

    • your group finishes in the time allotted.

    • your group turns in a complete, neat answer journey sheet.

Start Here: Print out one copy of the journey sheet per group.  Make sure all group members write their names on the paper.

Click on the highlighted links below to find the answers to your questions. Remember, you may not always find the answer on the first page. You may have to try other pages and other links.

Using the Canada Science & Technology Museum link, answer the following questions:

1. What are the two basic families of simple machines?

2. First, label each of the boxes on your answer sheet with one of the six types of simple machines. Next, write an example of each simple machine in the space under "Type".  Finally, draw and label the example of each of the six simple machines in the boxes.  Use color!

3. What does “work” mean in science?  (Include the formula.)

Using the Spotlight on Simple Machines link:

4. What is a simple machine? After answering the question above, read about each type of simple machine.  As you read, click on “Extra Information” for each.  Look for more links that will show you examples of each simple machine.  Discuss what you read with your group, then write two things you have learned on the back of your journey sheet.

Return to the Canada Science & Technology Museum link.  Answer the following questions:

5. Which simple machines belong to the inclined plane family?

6. Which simple machines belong to the lever family?

Using the BrainPOP link:

7. Watch the movie about the Inclined Plane.  Where did Moby send Tim at the end of the movie?

8. Play the quiz.  Some of the questions are hard, so think carefully about all you have learned.  Discuss the questions with your partner.  Try to make good guesses.

Using the EdHeads link:

9. Work through the activities on the EdHeads website.

10. Print out a copy of the test to see how much you have learned!  Turn it in with your journey sheet.
