Summer Reading

June 8, 2007

Dear Incoming Fifth Grade Students,

Your summer reading assignment is to read two works of fiction.  The first book is Freedom Crossing, by Margaret Goff Clark.   This book of historical fiction will return you to the time of the Underground Railroad.  Laura, the protagonist, believes helping fugitive slaves is illegal.  Then she meets a runaway slave who causes her to question her beliefs.

The second book, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, by Robert C. O’Brien, is a fantasy.  The main characters include a mouse with a problem,  rats who have been altered in a scientific experiment, and unlikely friendships that develop among creatures who need help.

Click here for the form you will need. You must complete one for each book, that you must turn in on the first day of school this fall.  Each square asks for specific details from the book that will help you remember what you have read.  On filler paper,  write three paragraphs for each book.  Remember that each paragraph should have at least five sentences.  The first paragraph should be about your favorite character in the book.  Include what it is about this character that you like.  The second paragraph should explain how the main problem in the story is solved.  Remember to focus on the problem and the solution.  Do not summarize the story.  The last paragraph should be your opinion of the book.  It is not enough to say that you liked or hated the book.  Give three reasons that explain your opinion.

Enjoy your summer break!
