Summer Reading

June 9, 2009

Dear Incoming Fifth Grade Students,

Welcome! I am looking forward to teaching you for a second year. Miss Elliott will teach math and social studies, and I will teach the other academic subjects. I know our time together will be a wonderful experience.

Your summer reading assignment is to read two works of fiction. The first book is Freedom Crossing, by Margaret Goff Clark. This book focuses on a girls struggle between to decide what is right and wrong. Laura has been living with her aunt and uncle because her mother died. When she returns home, she finds a troubling secret. Her brother and father have been helping runaway slaves escape to Canada. This is troubling to her because she knows this is against the law. Will she help her father and brother or turn them in?

The second book is The Tale of Despereaux, by Kate DiCamillo. This is a thrilling fantasy story about a mouse named Despereaux Tilling. He has high hopes and dreams for himself. He wants more than the world he knows and ventures out into the world of rats and people. During his journey he finds out what is important to him and that size is not a measurement of bravery. How does Despereaux show he is as brave as a knight?

Click here to access the form that you will need. You will complete one for each book and turn both in on the first day of school this fall. Each square asks specific details from the book that will help you remember what you read. On separate sheets of filler paper, write three paragraphs for each book. Remember that each paragraph is five sentences. The first paragraph should explain who your favorite character is in the book. Include what it is about the character you liked and give an example from the story. The second paragraph should explain how the main problem in the story is solved. Remember to focus on the main problem, the solution and who was involved. Do not summarize the story. The last paragraph should explain what you think happened next in the story. This must be a logical ending. Use the last few chapters in the book to help you decide what you think will happen next.

Have a wonderful summer!
