Introduction:  Jeffrey Magee is a mystery to all who encounter him.  His clothes are shabby, his shoes are in serious need of repair, and he doesn't understand rules that have existed in American society for years. Furthermore, he has a love of books that is combined with unusual athletic abilities, and he doesn't have a permanent address.  Just who is this strange kid?

Task:  Maniac has many special skills.  He is the first (and as far as we know, only) person to hit a frogball.  He manages to defeat the famous Cobble's Knot.  He is allergic to pizza, and he loves to read.  You and your group will gather information about the items mentioned above and display what you have learned.   Three tasks are required and must be completed in order to receive full credit.  To complete the webquest, choose one additional task to investigate.  You will present what you have learned to the class using a provided display board.

Procedure:

Required Tasks
Choose One
1.  Make a map showing the east and west sides of town.  Remember, Hector Street divides the two areas.  Your map must include a compass rose and a key that contains each symbol used.  There are many items you may include on your map.  Some of these include the school where Amanda first meets Maniac, Cobble's Corner, the Beale home, the zoo, and so on. Be creative!

2.  Do you know the history of pizza?  Click here to find out all you need to know, then share it on your display.  Be creative!  (Check out the mention of the queen's favorite pizza and the Italian flag, for example.)

3.  Grayson has a failed opportunity with the Toledo Mud Hens.  Click here to learn more about this minor league baseball team.  Make sure you share the information on your display.

1.  Go to Something Froggy and research frogs.  Choose three interesting things to share with the class on your display.  Possibilities include habitat, food sources, life span, and so on.

2.  You will research knots, then create a knot to display.  Label the type of knot you create.

3.  Maniac borrows a book about the Children's Crusade.  Click here to learn more about the crusade, then write a newspaper article reporting the crusade.  Include the location, the purpose, whether or not the crusade had the Church's blessing, and the result.

Outcome:  Jeffrey Magee is no longer a mystery.  You understand more about the division between the east and west end, and how Hector Street was the line that divided them.  You've learned about pizza, knots, and the Children's Crusade.  You know what a "mud hen" really is, and you're an expert on frogs.  Best of all, you've learned to work cooperatively with fellow classmates and learn from each other. Congratulations on all you have accomplished!
