Artist of the Month
Edward Hopper
Edward Hopper was one of the most famous
American realists of the 20th century. Realist
painters create very specific representations of the
often harsh reality of everyday life. Mr. Hopper was
born on Juy 22, 1882 in Nyack, New York. He spent
his childhood drawing pictures. After high school
graduation he moved to New York City where he
supported himself by doing commercial illustations
while attending the New York School of Art. He also
studied in Europe where he observed the latest art
developments. The mediums he worked in consisted
of etchings, watercolors, and oil paintings. The themes
of his work portrayed big-city life, especially at night;
rural landscapes showing railroads and highways;
movies and the theatre; and lonely solitary people
in simple settings. Hopper married Jo Nivison, an
artist and dance in 1924. It was at this time that he
began to attain success and acclaim for his art. He and
his wife lived a modest life that included spending
his summers at Cape Cod Bay. He died in his studio
on May 15, 1967
