On September 8, 1965, the doors of St. Joan of Arc School opened for the first time for students in grades one through six. A new school building, new playground equipment and a TV in each classroom were enjoyed by all. Led by Principal Sr. Mary Angelle, four sisters and two lay women were the first educators of 200 students at St. Joan of Arc School. The very first day began with students and staff attending Mass.
As the first SJA students moved on to junior high, a seventh and eighth grade class was added in 1967 and 1968. Within a few years, St. Joan of Arc School grew to be known as a vibrant K-8 Catholic elementary school serving families throughout the Chagrin Falls area.
As enrollment and educational needs grew under the direction of seven principals, plans were put into place for expansion and to continue a strong faith-based learning atmosphere committed to the future. Through the generous support of the St. Joan of Arc parish and school families, the following enhancements were made:
- In 1993, a new parish life center was built to accommodate the greater needs of the parish community. The Parish Life Center was also designed to serve the school with a state- of-the art dedicated School Gym, Lunch Room and performance quality Stage Area.
- In the mid to late 90’s, an innovative Outdoor Science Trail and a dedicated state- of- the art Computer Lab was introduced.
- In 2007, plans for the renovation and addition of a hands-on, interactive Science Lab and Art Studio had begun and were completed the following year.
