The class will be divided into two groups.
Group 1 will research and present information which supports the argument that the Industrial Revolution produced benefits which made life better for the citizen of the day.
Group 2 will argue that the Industrial Revolution resulted in major societal problems and actually made life more difficult for people.
Each student will research the question from any of the perspectives as follows:
A upper/uppermiddle class (factory owners, large land
owners, capitalists, financiers)
B middle class
(professionals, merchants, craftsmen, overseers,
factory managers, lawyers)
C lower class
(male, female and child factory workers, agricultural
Each student will individually research the question including as many as the above perspectives as possible and produce a newspaper article about this time period. The article will be factual but will also contain your opinion. Be sure to make it clear when it is your opinion you are expressing. When the article is complete, we will join groups 1 and 2 and create a newspaper. All articles are due on February 6, 2004.
After reviewing the newspapers, students will complete the final task as described in the Conclusion section.
